Michel Sedan
Born in Marseille in 1962, he soon became immersed in the photographic world of his grandfather and godfather, both of who were great travellers and avid photographers. It soon became apparent that his future would not lie in academic studies but that photographic empiricism would be his principle ideology.
Meeting individuals like Marcel Coen, Frederico Cimatti and Denis Jobron confirmed his desire to become a professional photographer. From them he learned the art of composition as well as studio techniques. He earned his first commission with the Madeleine Vionnet catalogue for the Fashion Museum in Marseille.
However it was during his numerous travels in America, Australia and Brazil that he found his element: the pleasure of working in the outdoors with natural light which led to advertising campaigns, fashion stories and portraits for international magazines.
Simultaneously he enhanced his personal work with intimate projects, taking him from the road of 'Busca Vida' to 'Contre- Nature': from portraits to his concept photographs of mortal remains.Despite the exploration of new techniques, however, he remains attached to the film process which, for him, maintains its mystery.
A recurring theme of water often infiltrates his work symbolic of his need for liberty. Enamoured of the female form in nature he floats her within the milieu of water. Several years were necessary to accomplish his personal opus, 'Naiades Nereides' from Delos to the Calanques of Sormiou, returning to his origins.
